Turf & Lawn Installation

Turf lawn with a curved garden-bed edge

Premium turf supply and installation — Sir Walter, TifTuf, and other varieties suited to Melbourne conditions. We don't just roll turf onto dirt. Every lawn we lay starts with proper soil preparation, grading for drainage, and the right variety for your site's sun, soil and use. With a building background, we treat turf installation as construction, not gardening.

What's Involved

Turf that starts with what's underneath

The reason most new lawns fail within a year isn't the turf — it's the soil underneath. Melbourne's eastern suburbs sit on heavy clay that compacts, holds water in winter and cracks in summer. Rolling turf onto unprepared clay means shallow roots, pooling water, bare patches and a lawn that never quite looks right. We see it constantly on new builds where the builder has thrown turf over construction rubble and called it done.

Our process starts with stripping the existing surface, removing debris and grading the site for proper drainage falls. We then rotary-hoe the subsoil, work in gypsum to break up the clay, add a quality underturf soil mix and compact and level to a finished grade that drains correctly. Only then does the turf go down. It takes longer, but it's the difference between a lawn that establishes in weeks and one that struggles for years. We also match the turf variety to your site — shade, sun, foot traffic and how much maintenance you want to do all factor in.

FAQ

Turf & lawn questions

How much does turf installation cost per square metre?
Premium turf installation including soil preparation typically runs $30 to $55 per square metre, depending on the variety and amount of prep work needed. For a 100-square-metre lawn, expect to pay from around $4,000 fully installed. That includes stripping the old surface, grading, soil amendment, laying and initial watering.
What's the best turf variety for Melbourne clay soil?
Sir Walter Buffalo is the most popular choice for Melbourne's clay soils — it handles shade, wear and the climate well. TifTuf Bermuda is excellent for full-sun areas where you want a finer leaf and lower water use. We assess your site's sun exposure, soil and how you use the lawn before recommending a variety, because the wrong turf in the wrong spot leads to ongoing problems.
Do you prepare the soil before laying turf?
Always. This is the difference between turf that establishes well and turf that fails. We strip the existing surface, grade for drainage falls, rotary-hoe and amend the soil with gypsum and quality underturf mix, then compact and level before laying. On Melbourne's clay, skipping soil prep means the turf sits on a hard pan that holds water and starves the roots.
How long does new turf take to establish?
With proper soil prep and watering, new turf roots into the soil within two to three weeks in the warmer months. It's generally ready for light foot traffic after three to four weeks and full use after six to eight weeks. We provide an aftercare guide with every install covering watering schedules, first mow timing and fertilising.
Do you install irrigation with new turf?
Yes. We install pop-up irrigation systems designed around your lawn's shape and water pressure, typically running $800 to $2,500 depending on the area. Irrigation makes a significant difference to turf establishment and long-term health, especially through Melbourne's dry summers. We can also connect to existing irrigation if you have one.
