Turf that starts with what's underneath

The reason most new lawns fail within a year isn't the turf — it's the soil underneath. Melbourne's eastern suburbs sit on heavy clay that compacts, holds water in winter and cracks in summer. Rolling turf onto unprepared clay means shallow roots, pooling water, bare patches and a lawn that never quite looks right. We see it constantly on new builds where the builder has thrown turf over construction rubble and called it done.

Our process starts with stripping the existing surface, removing debris and grading the site for proper drainage falls. We then rotary-hoe the subsoil, work in gypsum to break up the clay, add a quality underturf soil mix and compact and level to a finished grade that drains correctly. Only then does the turf go down. It takes longer, but it's the difference between a lawn that establishes in weeks and one that struggles for years. We also match the turf variety to your site — shade, sun, foot traffic and how much maintenance you want to do all factor in.
